An exhibition cycle in several parts focusing on the pictorial understanding of current art in the museum and in BASE103
Part I: Expanded Paint Tools Franz Ackermann. Jörg Sasse. Thomas Scheibitz. Tal R. Collector Ingvild Goetz on the concept behind her exhibition: "A key aim of Expanded Paint Tools is to demonstrate that painting is an established part of contemporary art. There has always been painting – and talk of a rebirth of painting seems illogical to me, as it has never ceased to be something artists did. At times it was more popular, at others less popular. Sometimes the public couldn’t get enough of it, at others they ignored it. In my view it is nevertheless time for painting to be considered part of artistic output in all media. For many of the works exhibited, classifications such as painting, sculpture, photography, film and video have long been inappropriate, since most artists no longer see themselves as just painters, photographers or sculptors. This is what Expanded Paint Tools is mainly about. Border zones between the different media have long been fluid, and traditional terminology is no longer capable of demarcating them. Subsequent exhibitions will also illustrate this same synergetic process. The aim is to highlight the general influence of painting on all others artistic areas. With my exhibitions, I am in fact endeavouring to break down rigid classifications. The approach that the Imagination Becomes Reality series of exhibitions represents is very personal, as is the concept underlying them. The title suggests, that my personal imagination might become reality through the exhibition cycle. I am not attempting to present an exhibition in the classical sense. I shall be delighted if I can stir things up a bit and stimulate discussion. For the same reason, the hanging of the exhibition was subject to very personal criteria and associations that ultimately made my decisions intuitive. The latter were influenced particularly by conversations with the artists and how I saw their work as a result". For decades, the traditional concept of painting in contemporary art is flexible, to which new facets are always added. For a long time now painting means more than just oil on canvas. The face of painting has changed extremely since artists began to experiment with new media. New technical possibilities as well as the desire to explore new frontiers have led numerous artists like Bill Viola, Jessica Stockholder or Jeff Wall in the 80s und 90s to broaden or entirely replace classical painting. With media such as film, video or installations, they began to transfer painting to another level, to approach it anew, to alienate or to imitate it. With painting as a source of inspiration, new enthralling tendencies, trends and work complexes developed incessantly. With Imagination Becomes Reality, an exhibition cycle in several parts, Ingvild Goetz would like to offer the opportunity to discover contemporary painting with its diverse forms of expression and techniques through confrontation, contrast and comparison The attempt will be made to present this crossing of frontiers through the comparison of photography, sculpture, painting and video. For the viewer, the medium of the artistic work will quickly become unimportant and the parallels between the different media will become even more apparent. The concept of painting will be virtually opened up to enable an approach to painting in the new millennium. Every exhibition in the cycle will present three, four or five artists from the Goetz Collection. The cycle will be opened with works from Franz Ackermann, Jörg Sasse, Thomas Scheibitz and Tal R. Some of Jörg Sasse’s photographs appear as impressionistic paintings. The work from Thomas Scheibitz – sculpture as well as painting – are shaped from room-grasping elements. Franz Ackermann confronts us with moving pictures, among others, while the works from Tal R only appear at first glance like typical paintings. A publication with pictures of the displayed works including texts, interviews and talks will be issued for every exhibition in the cycle. The entire cycle will be documented at closing in an anthology. The first catalog has 140 pages and approximately 80 color pictures, German/English (ISBN 3-9808063-5-9), and can be ordered at book stores or through the museum for €30. During the time of the exhibition, Franz Ackermann and Jörg Sasse will give a lecture about their works; the dates have yet to be confirmed.
