New York Painters is the second exhibition in the Goetz Collection’s private museum. While the opening exhibition focused on Ingvild Goetz’s beginnings as a collector and art of the 1970s, subsequent exhibitions will be centered around varying themes within the collection and will alternate semiannually.
New York Painters is dedicated to a generation of New York artists in the 1980s, which in their work found wholly individual forms of expression within the classical medium of painting. Common among the painters is their intellectual reflection and – only apparently contradictory – their free, unbiased exposure to painting. It is not by chance that in New York - the old haunts of the likes of Pollock and De Kooning - a conceptual form of painting has developed, which on this scale has never before been seen in Germany. Far away from Postmodernism and the cautiousness in dealing with painting, as recently documented in the exhibition the The Broken Mirror (Der Zerbrochene Spiegel), the medium has in New York long since found its way back to a naturally modern form (1). The exhibition is designed to provide a solid overview of the completely different results the nine artists arrived at in their experiments with painting. On display are works fromDonald Baechler, Ross Bleckner, Peter Halley, Jonathan Lasker, Richard Prince, David Reed, Peter Schuyff, Philip Taaffe and Christopher Wool. In many of the emblematic paintings shown, the difference between concrete and abstract has ceased to be perceptible. Around 30 large paintings and over 50 works on paper provide an introduction to the work and development of the individual artists. Alongside works from 1980s, new pieces directly from the artists’ ateliers will be on display.
