Installation view showing a black upholstered armchair with an ottoman, a floor lamp provides light in the otherwise darkened room. To the right in front of it is a drawn shelf, with books, folders and vessels inside. Behind the armchair against the wall, a shadow of the armchair and the floor lamp can be made out; in addition, a person appears to be lying on the armchair and ottoman. Zilla Leutenegger: Munich Apartment

In parallel with the exhibition Imagination Becomes Reality: Conclusion at the ZKM in Karlsruhe, the ZKMax in Munich presented the Kitchen and Living Room sections of Zilla Leutengger’s multi-room Munich Apartment installation.

In her works, Zilla Leutenegger combines drawing, photography, painting, sound and digitally manipulated moving images. The artist’s own persona also plays an important role. Ranging from still life to wall painting and from installation to video, her oeuvre generates a unique realm of perception in which the spatial illusion of two-dimensional media such as photography, painting and film are transposed into a tangible third dimension. As such, her work is an excellent example of the extended concept of painting as a means of portraying of our reality – one of the fundamental themes of the five-part exhibition cycle Imagination Becomes Reality.

Gutai. Collection + Goetz

| Pinakothek der Moderne | Sammlung Moderne Kunst (Modern Art Collection)

Since 2019, in the context of the Sammlung+ format, the Sammlung Moderne Kunst has presented artistic discoveries, new acquisitions and thematic foci in the Pinakothek der Moderne in collaboration with partners and foundations. This has led to the emergence of new perspectives on the collections, new insights into research work and the establishment of new dialogues. It is in this framework that a selection of paintings by the Japanese artist group Gutai from the Sammlung Goetz will be presented in room 23, within a series of rooms focusing on near-contemporaneous regional and German abstraction phenomena under the title “Walk the Line.”  Founded in 1954 by the abstract painter Jiro Yoshihara, Gutai was one of the 20th century’s most innovative artistic movements, which combined action, abstraction and materiality.
