Cindy Sherman at Palais Montgelas

In the context of Various Others 2025 the Sammlung Goetz is presenting a selection of photographs by the American artist Cindy Sherman (*1954) on the first floor of Palais Montgelas. Works from the series of History Portraits (1988-90) and Society Portraits (2008) enter into a dialog with the collection of historical paintings of the Hotel Bayerischer Hof.
Using masks and costumes, Cindy Sherman stages herself in role-playing games that evoke works from art history or images influenced by the media. In doing so, Sherman exposes the artificiality of self-representation and questions clichés, role models and fears of today's society.
