Darkened club room with red walls covered in graffiti. On the right is a seating area with red leather sofas over which hangs a disco ball. At the back left is a stage, behind it is a light installation projected on the wall.

Architecture and art around Sankt-Jakobs-Platz

In the middle of Munich's old town is the Sankt-Jakobs-Platz, an urban center for lingering. Today, the public square is best known for the Jewish Center and the City Museum - two places that are very important in terms of cultural history. However, the area is also home to special projects of contemporary art in public space, which we would like to explore with you: such as the sound stones in the alley by Andrea Schmeing-Häusler, the Passage Red Blue by Keith Sonnier or the memorial against exclusion by Ulla von Brandenburg. Art that becomes part of the urban space and the public gaze challenges its viewers on a daily basis and interacts with the surrounding architecture. We want to explore this interaction during our Architecture and Art Tour in the city center.

Afterwards, we will continue to the Pleasure Beach exhibition of the Sammlung Goetz at Unter Deck - a club at Oberanger 26 that has been in Munich since 2013. Since the outbreak of the corona pandemic, clubs in Munich have been largely closed. A melancholic mood has set in. The Sammlung Goetz uses this situation as an opportunity to present a selection of videos and installations by artists whose work explores club culture from the 1980s to the 2000s. In conversation with curator Dr. Cornelia Gockel, we learn more about the media works and the location, whose walls are covered with inscriptions and graffiti, and its worn, imitation leather sofas and scratched up bar counters testify to long club nights, evoking memories of better times.
